The church of St Mary, Houghton-on-the-hill, is one of the most important early churches in East Anglia - and home to England’s finest surviving collection of what is very likely 11th century wall paintings - but opinion exists that they may be even earlier. Today it is visited by hundreds of people each year, coming from all parts of the globe, and regularly hosts tours, school visits and special events. However, this has not always been the case…

When St Mary’s church was rediscovered in the early 1990s it was a crumbling ruin, open to the elements and the target of vandals. Also there was evidence of Satanic worship having been recently carried out. It’s churchyard was a mass of weeds, thistles and nettles that all but covered the church from view. The thousand year story of St Mary’s is a fascinating journey…
